An established specialist application

NKT’s technical information describes oil- and gas-filled cable arrangements that include lead sheaths. These are concrete examples of lead in installed infrastructure; they do not mean that every cable contains lead. Source: NKT

It is also important to distinguish a metallic sheath from the conductor, insulation, armour and external jacket. Each layer has a different job.

The operating environment decides

Nexans describes metallic sheaths as radial water barriers in high-voltage cable design and discusses the particular demands of dynamic applications. Movement and mechanical fatigue change the design problem. Source: Nexans

Our editorial view is that a credible materials case should be application-specific. Existing service experience has value, but it does not remove the need to compare available designs for the actual route, loads and operating environment.

Design for recovery, not just installation

When a cable is replaced, useful material recovery depends on access, separation and the waste-handling route. Recovery expectations should be supported by a realistic removal and processing plan.

Keep construction records and identify the materials in the retired asset. An ambitious circularity claim becomes meaningful when the owner can show who will recover the cable and where its constituent materials are intended to go.
